FFVII - Secrets & Etc

The Old Man at Kalm

At the Town of Kalm, on the second floor in the house on the far right, there's an old man. This man will give you an item if you give him an item he asks for. There are altogether three of them:

1- Guidebook - this is decribed as "a map that was sunk along with the ship." Morph the Ghost Ship you may encounter in the underwater tunnel at Junon. This item can be exchanged for the "Underwater" Materia which can be used to defeat the weapon under the sea...

2- Desert Rose - this described as "A rose that blooms once every 1000 years in the desert." You need to defeat 'Ruby Weapon' in the Gold Saucer Area (desert). This item can be exchanged for a Gold Chocobo.

3- Earth Harp - this described as "A harp that soothes those who hear it." You need to defeat the awesome 'Emerald Weapon' in the sea. This item can be exchanged for three Master Materias; one of each colour.

Huge Materia Rocket Code

Passcode for the Huge Materia in the Rocket is (for those of you wondering):

Circle, Square, X, X.

Turtle Paradise Flyers

All in all there are 6 paradise flyers. Here're the locations:

Flyer No 1. This one is in Midgar, near Aeris' house is a collection of caravans. On the second floor of the south-eastern building, go to the second floor and into a bedroom, on the wall there is a piece of paper.

Flyer No 2. The first floor of the Shinra building is a general notice for employees. The flyer is on one side of it. Get it in Disc one the first time you go here or you'll have to get it in Disc 1 or 2.

Flyer No 3
. Is in the Gold Saucer. Take the tube to the Ghost square and enter the hotel. Read the SHOP sign.

Flyer No 4. Is in Cosmo Canyon. Read the yellow sheet on the second floor of the Inn.

Flyer No 5. Is also in Cosmo Canyon. There's a note on the post beside the Tiger Lilies arms kiosk.

Flyer No 6. Is in Wutai, and if you've done everything right you'll be able to claim your prize straight after. When you've done Yuffies sub quest, go to the lowest floor of her house. It's the scroll on the wall right of the door.

Unlimited Items

This trick requires the W-Item materia. The materia is obtained after your party parachutes back into Midgar in Disc 3. After entering the subway tunnels in Sector 8, your party may walk away from the screen and encounter the Turks, or walk towards the screen to reach another subway section. Select the second choice and follow the subway tunnel until it ends at a dead end with the W-Item materia. Equip the materia on the character with the item to be duplicated. When a battle begins, select the W-Item entry on the battle menu, select an unimportant item and use it on any character. On the second item choice, select the item to be duplicated by pressing Circle, then press X to cancel your selection and increase the number of that item in inventory. Repeatedly press Circle followed by X to accumulate 99 of the duplicated item. Note: This will only duplicate item selectable in battle and can not be used to duplicate the various sources, materia, weapons, or armor.

Easy Battle Square Handicaps

During the "slot machine" handicap sequence, rapidly tap Square in the Battle Square section at Gold Saucer. The slots will slow down, allowing an easier selection of your handicap. Note: This trick will also work in a similar manner with Cait Sith's limit break.

Easy Chocobo Races

While racing a Chocobo, hold R1 + R2 to slowly restore energy on your energy bar.

Special Battle

To get to the URA battle (special battle) in the Battle Arena, first gain 64000 battle points and buy the W-Summon materia. Next get 32000 battle points and buy Cloud's level 4 limit, Omnislash. Equip Omnislash and talk to the lady at the counter in the battle arena, and she will ask you if you want to participate in a special battle. Beat all 8 enemies and get the Final attack materia.

Underwater Plane Crash

If you wander around in the submarine you'll eventually find a Shinra plane which crashed near the Gold Saucer in the harbour type enclosure. Bump into it with your Submarine to explore the plane. Inside you'll find powerful Materia, items, weapons, and a lot of Turks and monsters, which give you a lot of AP and EXP points.

Prevent Back Attacks

If your battle starts with a "Back Attack" hold L1 and R1 for a moment then release them. This will turn you around before your opponents get a shot.

Cast Any Spell Three Times

To cast three magic spells in one round, first equip someone with a Magic Materia + "All" Support Materia. You'll also need Barrier Materia with the Reflect spell learnt. When you enter battle, cast Reflect on the entire party (your party). Then cast the magic spell that was connected to the "All" Materia on YOUR party. Even though you casted the spell once, it will be reflected and returned to the enemy hitting for three times! And for the same price of the usual MP's. What's even better is that if you have W-Magic, you can cast that spell twice, or two different spells (both need to be connected to "All" Materia) hitting for six times!

Ancient Forest

To get to the Ancient Forest before disc 3, simply ride up the hill with a black, gold or green chocobo. (Fairly obvious, but I thought I'd tell you).

7777 Hits

To be able to get one of your character's to go ballistic and take a lot of damage off your enemies: adjust the HP for you current character to exactly 7777 by equipping and and unequipping various materia's. Now, when you go into a battle, the screen flashes "Wild Sevens" and the character you've put to 7777 HP will enter a beserk mode and you will be unable to control him, but will deliver 7777 points of damage each hit! This is useful early on in the game especially.

Enemy Skills

To get Enemy Skills much easier, manipulate the enemy and use their attacks against the person with the enemy skill materia. On the west continent beach near the top in an inlet, you can get an enemy skill that casts haste and wall on a character. In the crater the blue dragon and the (parasites?) each have two enemy skills.

Chocobucke

This is one of the most difficult Enemy Skills to get. First, buy 3 Mimett Greens at the Chocobo Ranch, then get in a battle with a Chocobo involved in it. Sense the Chocobo, and if his level is a multiple of 4, feed him the 3 greens, then hit him with Level 4 Suicide. He'll then counter with Chocobuckle. Great!

Cursed Ring

This trick will only work before Mideel is destroyed. Getting the Cursed Ring-When in Mideel, find the locked door. Walk around the corner, and a board will squeak. Examine the squeaky board, and you will find a key. Go back to the door, and answer the man's question truthfully, and the Cursed Ring is yours!
