The Final Fantasy 8 Walkthrough

1.3 Infiltrating the Missile Base

The action switches back to Squall and company, so head down through the lower end of the circular fence, exiting the area to keep on walking left towards the controls of the train. Board the train, and remember to try and avoid being spotted.

The action now moves to Selphie and her company. Press Circle to exit and save your game. Make your way to the Missile Base that's located at the other side of the desert (Click here for the world map). Note that the Galbadia truck you're in has limited fuel, so try not to wonder to far off track. When you reach the base, enter with the truck by driving into it - this way you will all be disguised as Galbadia soldiers. Now head left and you will be in a small room where there is a Save Point. When you have saved your game, examine the blue torch light and you will be able to open the door.

Inside you will see a Galbadian soldier guarding the door, which leads to the security system. As you enter, you will be given three options; pick any one of them and then hold X. Your party will now be walking in a serious manner, trying to remain un-noticed. Exit from this area and you will be at a junction where there are machines unloading missiles into silos. Proceed and exit from the screen.

In this area you will find:

    1) A guard standing in front of a door - In this room you will find dismantled missile warheads. There is a hidden Magic Stone near the warhead that says "03".
    2) A Save Point to the left - Heading south from here leads to the soldiers looking over a ledge. There's a Magic Stone where steam is being released.
    3) A computer on the right - This will allow you to try and prevent the missiles from hitting Balamb Garden. It is titled "Galbadian Republic Army Dept.", with a map of Galbadia.

Head to the place where you found the two Galbadian soldiers and talk to them. Once you have had a little chat, proceed back to the missile room (where there's a soldier examining the warheads). Once again, return back to the soldiers you just talked to and you will have a little sequence.

Head back to the first area where you find the soldier in front of the security system. Talk to him and enter the room (there's another Magic Stone). Now Selphie will examine the keyboard; choosing option 1 will cause Selphie to smash the keyboard automatically. Choosing option 2 will allow you to smash the keyboard yourself by pressing the Square button. The screen will fade and two Galbadian soldiers will come storming in. After the goings-on with the soldiers, head back to the area where you find the keyboard and you will see a Galbadian soldier calling some of his soldiers to enter the room where the warheads are. You now have the choice of running away, fighting them or continue to attempt your disguise. No matter what you decided to do, just simply go up the stairs and you will have to fight two Galbadian soldiers and a Captain. They have new spells such as Confu, so remember to draw from them.

Selphie's aim is to try and destroy the computer system. Talk to the person on the left and you will be able to move to the room in the next area. In the next area, examine the computers and Selphie will be able to set the self-destruct timer from either 10 or 40 minutes before self-destruct.

After you have chosen a time (I would say 20 minutes is possible, but you're probably best to choose 30) it's time to evacuate! Proceed to the first area where entered the building and the screen will switch to show a injured Galbadian soldier struggling to get to a panel back at the control center. You need to RETURN back to the control center.

When you arrive, you'll see a wounded guard on the ground. Talk to him and he will give you the ID needed to access the computer downstairs, so quickly head back to the computer system and press Circle. You can't stop the launch, but you can screw up the targeting system, so here's how you do it: Enter 'EDEA' as your password, and choose the 'TARGET' menu. In this menu, choose 'SET ERROR RATIO' and hold down 'Right' on the control pad until you reach the maximum status on the bar. Now choose the 'DATA UPLOAD' menu screenshot and select 'YES'. When you've done all that, log-off from the computer and head as fast as you can to the outside compound where you parked.

When you get outside, head towards your truck and you will see a short FMV of the missiles being launched. Keep going and some soldiers will unleash a huge mechanical monster to prevent you from leaving...

BOSS NO. 10: BGH 51F2, 1x Galbadian Captain, 2x Galbadian Soldiers
Name: BGH51F2 Level 12 HP: 6,400
Attacks: Machinegun attack, Laser Beam
Facts: Weak against Bolt/Earth/Ice. Poison does not work on the BOSS.
Draw: Shield, Barrier, Stop
AP gained: 4

Strategy
This BOSS is quite tough. Make sure you have G.F. monsters such as the Brothers, Quetzalcoatl and Shiva. Have tons of Bolt Magic especially because of its metal structure. Have two of your characters equipped with the "ITEM" command.

His laser beam attack packs a punch doing about 900+ which will brings low HP characters to their death, so you need a couple of Phoenix Downs. The aim is to destroy all of his chimley-like structures. After the metal beast has been defeated, you fight a Galbadian Captain and 2 Galbadian Soldiers. They are really easy as the sum of their total HP doesn't exceed 1,000 HP!

You will receive a Weapon Upgrading Manual for the forth month, after the battle. . .

After you've defeated the BOSS, head up and examine the missile launchers by continuosly pressing Circle by them. Your characters will take a closer look at them, which triggers an awesome FMV showing the base being blown up.

NOTE: If you did NOT turn back to the wounded soldier to set the error ratio, you will have an FMV of Balamb Garden being hit by the missiles and it's game over.

2.4 Garden in Trouble!

Squall will have returned back to Balamb Garden while Selphie and company were at the Missile Base. Things have changed since your last visit; everything is in chaos!

Notice that the Garden cadets are fighting the SeeD members...? Anyway, your objective for the moment is to find principal Cid and Sue. A Garden Faculty will come to meet you; pick the 1st option to avoid a battle with him, or choose the second to fight. When you have finished, head inside.

In an anti-clockwise direction:

1. At the Central Gate...
You will have to fight a BeePlant (previously found at the Training Center) and the caterpillar. You can get a Mega Potion by talking to the wounded Garden cadet at the gate.
2. At the Library
Talk to the Garden Faculty and pick second option to fight a Bee Plant. Talk to the ladies and one of them will give you a Remedy.
3. At the Training Center
Find two Garden cadets and a Garden Faculty head north. Follow them. They are trying to attack a SeeD Cadet, choose Option 1 to help them and you will have to battle the TRex! [Level 19, HP: 17,923]. After the battle, remember to talk to the female Cadet and she will give you a Remedy.
4. At the Parking Lot
Meet a Garden Faculty and fight a Lizard-type monster (Level 16, HP: 4,464). Quite easy, so you should have no problem if you have accquired high levels. Next you will find Cid, but he will disappear. Talk to the SeeD Cadet and you can get a Tent.
5. At the Dormitory
You will find a Garden Faculty and fight a caterpillar.
6. At the Cafeteria
You will find another Garden Faculty and fight a Bomb (seen at the Cave of Fire). You will find four students in front of the counter. Talk to one of them and you will get the Gisaal Vegetables!
7. At the Quad
No battles here. Head for the stage and three SeeD cadets will jump down. Talk to the cadet in the middle and he will give you a HiPotion.
8. At the Infirmary
You will see a scene between Garden cadets and SeeD cadets. Stop them and you will have to fight the Granald (Level 24, HP: 1,902). Next you will find Dr. Kadowaki at the Infirmary. Talk to Kadowaki and you will get an Elixir!

When you have done clearing up the mess around Garden, you will find Sue on her way to the elevator. You need to follow her, so head into the elevator to the second floor. On the second floor, head north and you will find Sue. After talking, head back to the elevator and to the 3rd floor. Exit the elevator and head north and you will at last find Cid. Talk to him and he will give Squall a key (you can save your game by talking to Cid again). Now you need to setup the 'MD system' (a protection barrier against Edea's missiles)...

FMV
Edea's weapons of destruction cut through the innocent skies like a knife through butter...

While in the elevator, Squall will have a blackout. After, examine the hatch that is directly under Squall's feet and climb down. As you are going down the ladder, be careful as the elevator will start to operate again! Now examine the hatch in front of Squall and head to the room on the left. Make your way to the huge tap and you will be asked to tap Square repeatedly for 10 seconds. If you fail your party members will approach Squall to lend a hand. After you have succeeded, climb down the ladder situated in the upper region.

You are now at the basement of Balamb Garden! Walk down the stairs to find a Magic stone near the pillar. Head upwards and you will have a short sequence. Controlling Squall, attempt to climb the ladder. When he reaches a certain point, Squall will force the ladder to reach the control room that's to the north. Now examine the controls on the right and the ground will eventually shake. Go up to the ladder and choose 1st option to go down. There's a door with a blinking green light. Examine it and you will be able to climb down the ladder. In the next area, you will find a handle near the Save Point. Have Squall push the handle and the metal gate will eventually open.

Save your game because there's a BOSS fight when you cross the bridge...

. .
BOSS NO. 11: WATER SNAKE x2
Name: Flood Snake Level 25 HP: 4,867 2x
Attacks: Grab and Bite, Light Beam, Flood Mud, Water attack
Facts: Weak against Fire. Water has no effect on the BOSS
Draw: Cure, Blind, Heal 2, Confu
AP gained: 20

Strategy
These guys are very tough. They do about 200+ HP damage with their Flood Mud, as well as 'Grab and Bite' packing a punch. Make use of your G.F.'s Ifrit and Quetzalcoatl as well as Lightning and Fire 1 ~ 3 magic (they are water-based creatures).

If you are low on HP, draw Heal 2 which will restore about 1,000+ HP. Their 'Flood Mud' attack will causes very high damage and sometimes causes Status disorders. Counter this with Cure. . .

After the battle, continue to cross the bridge and go down the ladder. This followed by another FMV sequence:

FMV
The missiles are coming fast. There's a view on top of the warhead, flying through the skies at a tremendous speed.

Now head left and you will find yourself infront of a gigantic pillar. Keep heading up, hugging the right, and the ground suddenly starts to shake; electricity starts to surround the huge pillar. The pillar will raise, causing Squall and his company to reach the 3rd floor where the Principal's office is.

FMV
A huge yellow hoop starts to cover Garden to form a protective barrier. Suddenly, Edea's missiles home into their target. Fortunately, Garden takes off!

Talk to Cid and choose any option. Exit from the area and take the elevator to the floor below. Go to the door towards the north of Squall's classroom.

screenshot FMV
You will view a beautiful scene of Garden flying in air surrounded by birds. If Rinoa is in your party, she will be admiring the sights of nature as well.

Exit and head back down the corridor to the elevator. A girl will come to tell you that the principal is looking for you, so press the controls on the elevator and get going!

FMV
Garden moves slowly, passing over the City of Balamb en route to the sea. The huge structure slowly lands onto the calm, brilliant blue, ocean.

After all the goings-on, Squall will be getting some rest in his bed. If Rinoa is in your party, she will come and wake him up, saying that she wants to visit the Cafeteria (if Zell is in your party, you will just find him waiting for his orders). Make your way to the lobby and a Garden Faculty will tell you to head for the basement, so head for the elevator. As you walk down the stairs, you will be joined by your party members.

When you arrive, you will see Cid being pushed about by a Garden Faculty, but he will leave when he sees Squall. Next, the ground starts to shake and a huge monster will reveal himself from an egg. Prepare for a battle with Nogue, Master of the Garden!

. .
BOSS NO. 12: NOGUE
Name: Middle Orb Level 17 HP: 2,000 Side Orbs Level 25 HP: 2,541 2x Nogue Level 25 HP: 11,600
Attacks: Middle Orb: n/a. Side Orbs: Bolt 2, Wind, Fire. Nogue: Bubble shot, Shield, Ice 2, Mirror Blast
Facts: Middle Orb: Strong against Lightning, Weak against Poison. Side Orbs: Fire/Ice/Lightning/Poison/Wind/Water/Holy has no effect on them. Nogue: Weak against Wind. Poison does not work on him.
Draw: Middle Orb: Heal 2. Side Orbs: Bolt, Life. Nogue: Shield, Barrier, Cure, Leviathan
AP gained: 20

Strategy

Draw Leviathan from Nogue as soon as possible
(i.e. when the middle orb is broken), before you forget!

This guy is rather tough. The Side Orbs can do a lot of mischief to your party, changing colour from Blue > Yellow > Red. Once they reach the Red stage, they will cast powerful spells such as Ice 2. You change them back to blue, and keep them there, by pysically attacking them (strong attacks will cause the orbs to change back to blue directly).

Note that before you can fight Nogue, you must break the middle orb. Once you have destroyed the middle orb, you can now draw Leviathan from Nogue.

Nogue is pretty weak against Shiva, but generally use your G.F.'s to inflict more damage (Siren does damage to all parts of the BOSS). You can use Carbuncle to reflect those pesky spells back onto the BOSS, but once you are in the Reflect status, you can't use magic to heal yourselves. Wind cannot be reflected. . .

After the battle, head back to the elevator and to the Dormitory to save your game. Next head for the Infirmary and talk to Dr. Kadowaki and choose the 2nd option. Now talk to Cid and you will given brief information within five options.

Cid has revealed that Edea is his wife! Aye Carumba!

After that shocking information, head for the Training Center and you will find a man selling items at the wooden planks. After you're done with your visit, head for the lobby and you will meet Sue. Next head up to second floor and head to that door with a blinking red light.

screenshot Outside, Garden seems to be docking with a large object... they are actually SeeD cadets. Cid will come in and have a short chat. Exit and you will have a sequence with your friends on the walkway. Now head for the library. At the library, draw some magic from the magic stone there and enter the area where you find the desks. There you will meet the girl called Elone who you saved at the Training Center (also that small girl who peeped into the Infirmary at the beginning of the game). After a little chat (the appearance of Laguna in Squall's dreams is actually Elone's doing...), Elone will leave Squall to head for the SeeD ship.

FMV
The plates behind the large ship raise and the ship is set to sail into the evening sun...

After all the excitement, Squall will be back in a dormitory getting some well-earned sleep. He'll be dreaming of a little boy standing outside on a porch of an old looking building, sheltering from a huge downpour....

If Zell or Rinoa is in your party, he or she will come to Squall and wake him, so exit the dormitory and Cid will make an announcement through Balamb Garden's loudspeaker system (notice he seems to be having a little trouble!)...
