I think there are a few things that make a game, any
game, a masterpiece.
Storyline: OK. Anyone can make a game that has little or no plot, where
your objective is sort of ambiguous; "Kill the bad guy". Games like this
are targeted at a specific audience and are usually not very fun for those
of us that don't fall into that category(there are exeptions, based on the
other factors below). I was very impressed with the way the story in FF7
unfolded, revealing important pieces to the puzzle as the game went on,
but not giving away the whole story until very late in the game. I hope
to see more of this in FF8. A related concept is a "nonlinear" storyline,
which is a term wantonly abused by reviewers and game designers alike. I
would love to see a story that changed drastically depending on your
actions throughout the game. Games that have multiple endings based on a
single important decision are sometimes more interesting, but not by much.
I'd like to see a game that has a story which takes wildly different
directions because of the player's act!
ions.
Innovation: Everyone wants to see something new. When we play the same
type of game, even if it has better graphics or voiceovers or characters,
it is still almost the same game. I've seen some things on other posts
that suggest improvements to FF8, but alot of them are improvements that
exist in other games. While they would undoubtably make the game better,
let's have something that's never been done before. Doom was a game that
presented something no one had ever seen before, and now there are dozens
of clones that are only marginally better than the original.
Beauty: I'll admit that graphics and CG sequences really do add substance
to a game, though I don't think they are really integral. Music is
another thing that can set an atmosphere really nicely, and in some ways
it is more important than graphics. Fighting Sephiroth was a totally
different experience from all the other FF end bosses, and the music
played a big part in that. Sqare seems to have these down pat.
Playability: This is sort of a catchall category. Basically what I mean
is all those little things in a game that make the difference between
playing it until you beat it and playing until you pass out. FF7 had alot
of these, but really not enough. It was such a long game that the idea of
playing through more than a few times was enough to make me cringe. I
played through the game twice, and the second time was just to get a save
game right before each of the FMVs. The minigames were a good idea, but
alot of them looked as if they had been thrown together on a long weekend.
The magic system is another thing that could have been done better. As
soon as I saw the first level Fire, Ice, and Bolt, I could already predict
90% of the spells that would be used in the game. One of the things that
made Suikoden so much fun was finding all the new spells the characters
could learn. I think it's about time Final Fantasy recieved a host of new
spells and abilities.
Well, anyway, I'm looking forward to FF8, even if it doesn't fulfill my
every wish.

First and foremost, I want a version for the PC. One
without Eidos(DIE! DIE! DIE!!!!!)
Second, longer and bigger.
Third, HARDER!!!!!!!!!! ffvii was waaay too easy. I want an RPG that takes
strategy to succeed at. I want it to be a must that i save all the time,
just because i may die in the next battle.
From what i understand, there are going to be different political groups
in ff8. Maybe, for each different dukedom have a different monetary system
instead of the universal gil or gp. Have it be so different that you
couldn't spend the $$ from one duchy in the shops of another without going
to a money changer.
On music, get an orchestra to do the score.
Also, make the characters look their respective ages. I don't know about
you, but Seifer doesn't look 18 to me. More like 24 or 25.
The most important thing, i think, is the plot, the story. FF3(6j) had a
VERY intricate plot. There should be required reading for all the
designers. Tolkeins's "Lord of the Rings" and Jordan's "Wheel of Time"
series spring to mind. Now there's some seriously convoluted plot. There
should be some real betrayal, not the kind where a character goes to the
dark side then comes back to the good guys, but where they truly become
evil. or vice versa. Let's see some decent "unrequited love." They toyed
with it in the beginning of ff7 between Cloud and Tifa, but it was a pale
shade of what it could have been. Or how about some serious conflict
between two or more of the characters. Maybe something that drives one or
both of them out of the group for a long perios of time. A good story will
make one feel what the characters feel, it'll evoke deep reactions from
the reader. For example, I was seriously pissed when Aeris died. The same
for General Leo in ff3.
Also, drop the "One Main Character" idea. In ff3, Terra was central to the
plot, but only slightly more so than the rest of the characters.
In ff7 Cloud literally disappeared off the face of the planet for a while.
But not for long enough. The quest to find him again should have been
almost like a separate game. There should have been real challenge
involved. Maybe a major sacrifice required to get him back.
Another thing i would love to see is more nonhuman characters. I loved Red
XIII. Maybe they could have a chocobo character. Novel concept, no? And
bring back moogles. Moogles are one of my favorite things out of the FF
games.

My wish is that something actually works out in this
game. If Squall and Rinoa are the love intrest of the game, I hope they
actually get together! That is one of the reasons why I didn't like the
ending to FF7 and FF6 (3, US). About the killing off a character, I
actually want that to happen. In all the Final Fantasy games, Square has
managed to kill of one good character. I like this. It has given more
realness (what kind of word is that) to the games. There was of course
Aeris in FF7, and people never cease to think she can come back. There
was General Leo in FFVI, and there was Tellah in FFIV. This has always
been great. It's good to show the emotions of the characters. I wish it
will not be Zell who dies, though. I don't know, but what if it was
Seifer? Squall and him seem to have never gotten along, but Squall could
realize they we're actually buddies, or something like that. My other
wish is that is a character is killed off, then Squa!
re will actually let Americans have a chance to revive them! It's really
not fair. It also wasn'y fair to hit us with all those annoying Weapons
in FFVII/

The one thing that really pissed me off about ff7 was
the fact that there were no voices...you know, the characters didn't talk.
But you've still got to have the dialogue boxes in there, 'cos otherwise
you're going to miss stuff.
I think the best way to do it would be like Broken Sword I/II. You have
the speech AND the text (which can be turned off) so you don't miss
anything.
But there are some problems with this aswell:
1.) Slowdown. If you've ever played Broken Sword you'll have heard the
little gaps while the speech streams off the CD, especially with a long
section.
2.) Disc Space. That speech is going to take up a helluva lot of
space...=£££££ on top.
But anyway, I hope FF8 is worth the wait.
There was somebody moaning about materia and how they wished it was gotten
rid of on FF8. Well it is, you now get to draw magic from enemies when you
defeat them in battle and only get to use them once (like Earth Drum etc
in FF7) so bully for you, but you can't say materia wasn't a good system.
Finding a really good combo or chain is one of the most satisfying things
you can do in FF7 and it was so intuitive as well as the fact that by
limiting the slots available in the early game weapons (and type of slot
and growth) you get a wonderfully effective way of gradually introducing
more powerful chains and combos.
Anyway, i'd better go now, and i hope you all enjoy any FFgame that comes
out from now on (and if you don't then you're a bit of a burk).
BYEEEE!

I would like to see: I thought that final fantasy 7 was just too easy and
that the game just left too many questions unanswered. I would like ff8 to
have a more in-depth storyline. Also I would like to point out that ff7's
ending was to informative. Like I watched the ending and then I waited
after the credits to watch th 50-years-later cut-scene and I thought it
would tell me what happened later, but all it showed was redXII running
with his cubs up to the top of cosmo canyon to see midgar overgrown with
trees and greenery. what happened to cloud? is he still alive? and what
about barret's little girl marlene? also did cid get his dream to fly into
space again? see? to many things left unanswered.
oh and in ff8 could we please have harder monsters and more fantasy?
Also please make a better menu system because ff7's sucked! why can't it
be like parasite eve's? because it way too long to save and enter and exit
the menu.
one last wish. I think ff8 should have better fighting like in xenogears.
i don't mean we should have giant gears (although it would be cool) but
you should be able to fight on chocobos and move around. oh and i almost
forgot, i'm a big fan of dialouge so this time round i want characters
that speak differently depending where they're from. remember frog in
chrono trigger?
Sorry if this was too long.

I would like to see: Well I had a whole list of things I was going to say
but most of them were already mentioned...I guess that's a good thing
because it means I'm not alone and maybe someone designing the game is
thinking the same thing. Anyway, I really hope that they do come out with
a PC version because otherwise this will be the first FF I will be forced
to miss (I really hate to spend all of that money for a PS when they are
coming out with a new system in the very near future). The only other
thing is every charater should be with the party at all times. If they can
come up with a logical reason to why someone would be missing, fine, but
let all the people fight. It doesn't make sense to have a group of seven
or eight people all at the end of the game and only three of them go on to
fight the last boss. In FF7 there were too many lame excuses as to why
only three people could be in the party and the further into the game I
got the more it appeared the creators of the g!
ame just gave up completely. Well, those are my wishes (or gripes,
whatever fits best). Thanks for reading.

First of all, I would like ff8 to differ a lot from
ff7. For Instance, why was it that Midgar was a huge mega city, yet you
could only explore about two sections? In the parachute scene, you
couldn't enter any buildings. whats up? the city looked like it would
contain tons of exploration, but alas, i was dissapointed. Also, I think
the idea of multiple worlds would be cool. the moon in ff4 was too small.
More secret characters, having something to do with the plot. I also
agree that the main character shouldn't steal the spot. More love
interest too. ff7 was too suggesting and didn't develope any
relationships. Thats one of the things that made ff4 and xenogears great.
Im tired of hearing people saying there should be appearances from
characters in ff7. Cid, vicks, wedge etc. have been in almost all final
fantasy games, they are the running joke as it were. but putting cloud
and aeris in ff8 would be dumb. Also, no continuations of past final
fantasy stories. the reason the games are called final fantasy is because
its the last big adventure for that planet. They're not supposed to be
sequels. thats my opinion.

I've been playing RPG's for a long time now, and
most of them where great, but I would like to see them evolve. I'd like an
RPG that is like an interactive movie. I want to feel for the characters,
be angry, sad, and happy along with them. I want to feel this game! I'd
like it to be as realistic as possible. No more dialoge boxes, I'd like
them to talk to me! (And make it sound like they mean it too, Resident
Evil's acting was awful...)
Also, have you ever noticed that in all of the older RPG's, the people
in the towns where just walking around doing absolutly nothing? That needs
to stop. I want to see people going shopping, going to cafe's for coffee,
taking their kid to a toy store, going for grocerys, doing SOMETHING. I
think they also need to change the fact that you just walk into a persons
house, without them caring that some strange group of people just waltzed
right into their home, and just taking whatever you want, and then
waltzing right on out of there. I think thats kind of dumb. Why don't you
start a conversation with this person (one that you, the gamer, decides
on) and say something along the lines of, "I'm traveling to this place and
I'd like directions and I don't have enough money for supplies, bla bla
bla. That would pretty much cover up breaking in and stealing.
And speaking of conversations, I want ones where you can chose to say
whatever you want...sometimes. Not all the time. Like, for example, if
Zell and Selphie are having this deep conversation and she asks him out,
his reply is completely up to you. He could say whatever you want. You
could have Zell say 'Yes, for I love you with all my heart' or 'No, go
away, you scare me'. Or whatever, whatever you type in, whatever you
decide. I think in certain situations, that option would be awesome.
I also don't want anyone to die!!!
(Except, of course, the villian. And Selphie. ^_^) Aeris was my favorite
character in #7 and I was real upset when she died!
I also don't want any optional characters. Whats the point? Its
especially stupid when they are'nt in the ending. Vincent and Yuffie must
have been left behind or something in #7. I though that the fact that they
were'nt in the ending was really lame. It just made the ending worse than
it already was.
Well, thats it! I don't expect all my dreams to come true in #8 (that
does'nt mean that it won't be my favorite game of all time) but I'm hoping
that at least some can become a reality. Thanx!

Square should let the "secret" characters be in the
ending, where the hell was Yuffie and Vincent in FF7? They should also put
a first person view on the airship mode, I hate how airships get in the
way, and they should add a Tekken 3 style fighting game as a secret.
Square should also get one of those codes that require you to press
buttons, (like in FF1 where you could play that game on the boat by
holding A and press B 55 times, that was cool) they should also add a
porno mag like in FF4j, not that it really matters a lot though.

Square needs to return to take a hint from its
earlier works and include the best features of each as well as adding new
elements that keep the game innovating as well as enjoyable. For example,
battle sequences where done best in (duh), Final Fantasy Tactics, where
movement and range where actual factors in the battle and formation was as
important as well. Multiple endings depending on your actions all
throughout the game like in chrono trigger would not only make the game
more interesting, but would raise its replay value, and tons more of the
FMV sequences like in 7 but with voices. I can do with the text boxes, but
for the FMV, you gotta have voices.
Another important item for me is that square return to its roots and use
more artwork like in FFT and SaGa Frontier. People seem to have gotten in
the mindset that crappy poligonal monsters are better than the
super-detailed artwork of past like used in FFIII. A mix of the two would
work best, like they used in Tactics.
A major problem that I had with FF7 was that the game was too linear, and
many of the characters I thought had potential were underdeveloped to the
point that they were uninteresting and had no real motivation, like
Sephiroth.
So in conclusion, for this to be a truly great game, square needs not only
to be innovative and creative with new concepts for the games, but also
smart enough to recycle its better elements from its older hits, like FF
Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, and SaGa Frontier.

I have a lot of ideas for Final Fantasy VIII that are
kind of just moderations to aspects of FF VII. First off, there needs to
be more female characters in FF8, because from what I'm seeing there is
only 1! I mean, c'mon! There should be lots of minigames like in Final
Fantasy 7, but more interactive then, say, the chocobo races from FF7. I
think you should be able to control maybe 4 or 5 characters on the battle
screen at once, and then combine their spells or something to cause a
helluva lot of damage. I think there should be more and bigger towns and
cities to explore and you should be able to make the character jump, crawl
and other actions when you are in towns. I don't know how everyone else
thinks, but I really liked the materia system, so they should have
something like that in FF8 (although I already know they're not going to).
This might be a kind of dumb idea, but I think it would be a fun and
interesting if you could open up your own stores. You know how in FF7 you
could buy that villa in Costa Del Sol? I think you should be able to
something like that in FF8, but also open your own item store. You could
get a whole bunch of items throughout the game and then open up your own
store at your house or whatever you bought. You would get a lot of money
while your out fighting and then you could just go back and collect it.
It's kind of dumb, but its an interesting idea.

I hope that FFVIII Has more side quests. I want the
game to be much much harder! I am tired of reading articles about
pre-released games saying they will take at least 100 hours to beat and me
sitting down and beating them in 40 hours. And i'm sorry to tell you guys
full motion video is not everything, I think it should only be used to
further the story, but if i'm playing a game thats 3 gigs long and 2.99
gig of that game is FMV they've not put in enough gameplay. Voices...
SHEESH people... who cares, I mean really. If you can't read then you
shouldn't be playing. You guys are complaining about two much technology,
which is my stance, but i'm sure back when they were medieval you were
complaining about them not having enough technology. I hope FFVIII
doesn't have any deaths of the main characters. Aeris' death did make me
angry, there was no real purpose, except for one which was a good one - to
make people hate Sephiroth all the more. I want RPG not!
Adventure... I love great graphics, but I can still sit down and enjoy my
8-bit and 16-bit RPGs and love them all the same. Get rid of the gay

First of all i think there should be tons of secrets
and side quests to go and do if you're at a point where the only thing
left to do is go and beat the last boss or something. FF3 was great
because of a lot of the secret characters like Umaro the sasquatch and
General Leo and Mog the moogle. FF7 did have some "some-what" secret
characters but they weren't secret enough, like Yuffie, if you did what
Cid said and went to the nearest piece of land after the Tiny Bronco got
shot, than you would have been forced into the "find Yuffie" scenario.
Finding Vincent was a good example of what i'm looking for. Also, the
Chocobo breeding was a great idea, it really upped the replay value of the
game because you had to spend so much time trying to get those damn things
to screw. Also places like the forest of the ancients, places where you
cand find items and weapons and spells that aren't really a necessity to
beat the game, but are really neat just to have.
Also to answer those people who keep crying about tons of detail...First
of all, there is SO MUCH text in any RPG that there couldn't possibly be
enough space on a cd-rom to hold all that speech. Also there are tons of
different armors and sheilds and so forth, so they would have to make a
separate model for each to make them visible. Multiply the number or
armors and shields and stuff by the number of characters and that's how
many models or different textures they would have to make, and that would
be taking up too much space that could be used for something else.
I guess that's it. Sorry for writing so much and thanks for reading so
much.
