Final Fantasy VIII Abilities

Command Abilities

Cerberus

Basically, Command Abilities are the options available to you in battle, such as Magic, G.F. and Item. You can only equip 4 commands to each character throughout the entire game, so the best possible setup is essential. There are, however, more commands available other than the usual ones, with some proving quite beneficial during big battles.

Command: | Magic | G.F. | Draw | Item | Card | Death Sentence | Rush | Chiryou |
| Defend | Ankoku | Full Recovery | Absorb | Sosei | Self Explosion |
| Level Down | Level Up | Eat |

Ankoku Command
G.F's Diablo, Grashaboras, Eden.
Description Sacrafices the equipped character's HP in order to inflict more damage on the enemy.
Requirements: N/A
AP: 100
Use Quite a risky command to use, but quite effective when your character's HP is high and the enemy's low. If your character's attacking power is at 230, you can inflict 9999 HP of damage at the cost of only 1/20th of your HP. Still available if the character is silenced.

Full Recovery Command
G.F's Leviathan.
Description Enables the equipped character to fully restore a chosen character's HP.
Requirements: N/A
AP: 200
Use A really useful command that can save your skin many times during big boss fights. Try to equip to a character as much as possible. Also very useful against undead creatures as an offensive command (9999 damage), and causes instant death to Zombies. Available when character is silenced.

Absorb Command
G.F's Grashaboras, Pandemonium.
Description Drains HP from the enemy and used to heal the equipped character; rate depends on the foe's HP level.
Requirements: N/A
AP: 100
Use Useful if you are low on HP and lack potions etc, and serves as an effective command in most cases as it takes HP from the enemy, while at the same transferring it to your character. From low-level creatures, about 300 HP is taken, while if successful on higher HP foe, up to 1000 HP can be absorbed.

Sosei Command
G.F's Alexander.
Description Works in the same way as a 'Phoenix Down' - reviving a character from the dead and restoring some HP.
Requirements: N/A
AP: 200
Use This command is much more practical that using an item such as 'Phoenix Down' because you don't have to scroll through a huge list of items to find what you want!

Self-Explosion Command
G.F's Sabotendar.
Description The character who uses this command, surges forward and explodes into the enemy, resulting in up to 30,000 HP of damage. Unfortunately, it's quite a gamble as your character will be unavailable for the rest of the battle.
Requirements: N/A
AP: 100
Use It can do a lot of damage to a high HP enemy (up to 60,000 when the character used is at 99), but you are left without the used character and he or she will have 0 HP after the battle. Use at your own risk!

Level-Down Command
G.F's Tonberi.
Description Lower your opponent's level - therefore meaning its HP and attributes will be lowered. If successful, a status bar appears to the top of the screen.
Requirements: N/A
AP: N/A
Use Ideal if you want easier battles, at the expense of lower EXP points upon victory. For wimps only.

Level-Up Command
G.F's Toberi.
Description Increases your opponent's level - therefore meaning its HP level will be higher, and attributes more effective. If successful, a status bar appears to the top of the screen.
Requirements: N/A
AP: N/A
Use Ideal if you want harder battles to gain loads more EXP points upon victory. Useful if you are intent on increasing your character's level. (Note: Effective when combined with the 'Absorb' command).

Eat Command
G.F's Eden.
Description Having a very low success-rate, 'Eat' can cause Instant Death and some status ailments.
Requirements: N/A
AP: N/A
Use As it doesn't work most of the time it can be annoying, but very rewarding when it acually works!
